Food FAQs

Where are your sandwiches made?
In the wee hours of the morning our staff trickle into our production kitchen, located at 405 Collins Street below our flagship store.

Our muffins go into the oven at 5:00am and are delivered fresh to our stores each day.

The sandwiches, baguettes, smoothies, juices and salads hit the stores between 7:00 and 9:00am each day.
Are your products organic?
You think you are drinking a freshly squeezed apple juice, not knowing that the apples were picked eighteen months ago and stored in an oxygen deprived environment. The rise of organics is throwing a spotlight on the nutritional consequences of the growing and storage environments of fresh produce.

Currently a fully organic range would be prohibitively expensive because we do not make to order, but we buy organic where we can. The muesli in our yoghurts is organic, the juicing oranges we use are organic. We will keep you posted.
Do you provide nutritional information?
We do have nutritional information if required, however we are reluctant to place it on our packaging as it runs contrary to our feel good philosophy. We are losing our ability to taste what is fresh and good for us. Trust your common sense, trust your instincts, eat for energy, eat to live and live well.
Which products are low fat?
Food labeling legislation requires that foods must demonstrate a fat content of less than 3% to be labeled low fat. Choose juices, green salads, the pritikin muffin fruit salads and products without mayonnaise if you are concerned about fat content. There is no butter or margarine on any of our sandwiches and baguettes.
Are the sandwiches really healthy?
Yes they certainly are. We cook our own meats, use no butter or margarine, use the freshest fruits and vegetables we buy from Footscray market. We use fresh bread and seasonal items. We believe that good health is as much about happiness and feeling good as the nutritional breakdown of what you eat.
What is in the pritikin muffin?
The Pritikin muffins are named after Nathan Pritikin who was a pioneer in reducing cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and obesity through a diet that cut out all fat and sugar.

Our Pritikin muffins are made with oatbran - a small amount of flour, egg whites, fresh fruit, nuts and fruit juice. They do have a small amount of yoghurt but contain no butter or milk.
What is the low fat banana berry?
Similar to the pritikin though made with flour - contains no butter, yoghurt or milk. Bound with egg white and fruit juice.
Do you use margarine or butter?
No. There is no butter or margarine in any of the sandwiches or baguettes.
Is the yoghurt low-fat?
Low fat yoghurt must contain less than 3% fat. Our yoghurt contains 3.7% fat, that .7% fat is what gives it a fabulous taste.
Where do we get our coffee?
We use Atomica Coffee.

They are a local roaster based in Brunswick Street. The beans are roasted weekly and they have a retail store if you would like to purchase beans for your home.
What kind of chicken is it?
Skinless steamed chicken breast. Cooked and sliced by us in our kitchen.
What is HACCP?
HACCP is an international quality accreditation standard which certifies that our food safety procedures and standards are the best in our industry. HACCP is an acronym for Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points and was invented by NASA as a means of ensuring their astronauts would not be compromised with food poisoning while attempting to land on the moon.

It means that we have investigated each part of our business from initial supplier to the product you purchase and put in place procedures and quality checks to ensure that the food our customers purchase is safe.
Australian food safety standards
HACCP Certified
HACCP is an acronym for Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points. It was a system invented by NASA to analysis every step of their food processing procedure from gate to plate to ensure the highest food safety standards were part of their process. In Australia it is a certification that the highest food safety standards are being met and monitored at Bluebag.
